Decommission means existing assets that are reasonably likely to be retired, removed, or de-rated in a similar timeframe. Retired assets can then be decommissioned, reducing operational costs as simple as turning off the power to the asset and disposing of the asset responsibly.
When we say Decommission responsibly that means it’s should not leak your Data or it should not harm nature. That’s why we need to follow the E-waste process, especially for IT assets.
In order to decommission an asset follow the below Best Practice
- The asset cannot be under warranty.
- The asset cannot be tagged to project work and is in use.
- The asset cannot be attached to any purchase requisitions.
- Check if the asset can replace, nowadays we can return the old Asset to the vendor while purchasing a new asset
- Make sure you followed secure data wipe.
- Make sure to follow the hard disk degaussing process if the hard disk not working.
- Make sure you have kept a secure wipe or degaussing certificate.
Once the asset has been decommissioned you are not able to do any changes to that asset apart from changing the status in your asset register as decommissioned.
